Global eSIM

Global and regional plans – 23 options

What is a global eSIM and what is it for?

A global eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you use mobile data in dozens to hundreds of countries with one plan. You don't need to change SIMs at borders or deal with roaming from your home operator. Just activate the eSIM on your phone before or after arrival and data works in all included countries.

Unlike a single-country eSIM, a global eSIM covers multiple destinations. A regional eSIM (e.g. Europe, Asia) is valid only in that region. A local eSIM is for one country only and often offers the best price and data volume there. A global eSIM makes sense when visiting multiple countries, on layovers, or when you travel often for work and don't want to sort out a new plan for each destination.

An eSIM for worry-free travel is ideal for multi-day to multi-month trips across continents, for digital nomads, and for anyone who wants to be connected as soon as they arrive without hunting for a SIM shop. One activation, one price, data in many countries.

How a global eSIM works (step by step)

1

Buying the eSIM

Choose a global plan by validity and data volume. After payment you receive an email with a QR code and instructions.

2

Installation via QR code

On your phone open Settings, the mobile data / eSIM section, and add the eSIM by scanning the QR code or entering the code from the email.

3

Activating data on arrival

When you're in a country where the eSIM is valid, turn on "Use data" (or similar) for it. The data plan usually activates automatically on the local network.

4

Switching networks between countries

When crossing into another included country you don't need to change anything. The phone connects to the partner's local network and data continues on the same plan.

5

Managing the eSIM on your phone

In settings you can choose which eSIM is used for data and calls. After the eSIM expires you can remove it or leave it inactive on the device.

Who is a global eSIM ideal for?

Multi-country travel

Example: A two-week trip Prague → Greece → Turkey → back. With one global or regional eSIM you have data along the whole route without swapping SIMs at borders.

Digital nomads and remote work

Example: You work a month from Portugal, then from Thailand. A global eSIM with long validity gives you stable connectivity without buying a new plan in each country.

Short holidays vs. long stays

For a short holiday in one country a local eSIM may be enough. For a longer stay or road trip across several countries a global eSIM is more practical than several local cards.

Business trips

Example: Regular trips to Germany, Poland and Ukraine. One regional plan (e.g. Europe) covers all three and you avoid roaming or company SIM hassle.

Global eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM

Criterion Global eSIM Roaming Local SIM
PriceKnown upfront, often good value for multiple countriesOften more expensive, risk of surprise chargesUsually best value in one country
ConvenienceActivate at home or on arrival, no card swapNo swap but dependent on home operatorNeed to buy and insert a physical SIM
CoverageDozens to hundreds of countries depending on planDepends on operator agreementOne country only
Physical SIM requiredNoNoYes
FlexibilityHigh – one plan, many destinationsMedium – limited by operator offerLow – new SIM when changing country

A global eSIM combines a fixed price with coverage in many countries and no physical card. Roaming is convenient but can cost more and depends on your home operator. A local SIM is ideal if you stay in one country and don't mind getting it on the ground.

How to choose the right global eSIM plan

By trip length: Short stays (e.g. a week) can be covered with a 7–14 day validity plan. A six-month or year-long trip needs long validity so the eSIM doesn't expire after a few weeks.

By number of countries: If you're only going to Europe, a regional European eSIM may be cheaper than global. For a mix like Europe + USA + Asia, global or several regional plans may work better depending on price.

By data usage: Light use (email, maps, messaging) often fits a smaller bundle (e.g. 1–5 GB). Video streaming and hotspot for a laptop mean higher usage – pick plans with more data or "unlimited" where offered.

Categories like Light / Standard / Max usually reflect data volume and sometimes speed or network priority. Light is enough for browsing and messaging. Standard adds headroom for photos and occasional video. Max or unlimited plans suit heavier use or hotspot sharing.

Frequently asked questions about global eSIM

What is a global eSIM?

A global eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you use mobile data in many countries with one plan. You don't need to change SIM cards when moving between included countries.

Does a global eSIM work on iPhone / Android?

Yes, if the device supports eSIM. Most recent iPhones (from XS) and many Android models (Samsung, Pixel, etc.) support eSIM. Check in settings or on our device compatibility page.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

In your phone settings look for "Mobile data" or "eSIM". If you can add an eSIM or scan a QR code, the device supports it. See our device compatibility page for the exact steps.

When does the eSIM activate?

The eSIM usually activates when you first use it in a country where the plan is valid (connection to the local network). Some plans allow activation before departure; it depends on the plan.

Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes, if your phone and plan allow it. Hotspot settings depend on the device; the data allowance applies to both direct use and sharing via hotspot.

Is a global eSIM secure?

An eSIM is a digital profile on the device and behaves like a normal SIM for data; traffic goes over local operator networks. It's important to buy from trusted sellers and protect access to your email and account.

What's the difference between regional and global eSIM?

A regional eSIM is valid only in a specific region (e.g. Europe or Asia). A global eSIM covers multiple regions or the world under one plan. The choice depends on which countries you plan to visit.

How many countries does a global eSIM cover?

It depends on the plan. Some cover dozens of countries, others 100 to 190+. Check the plan details for the exact list.

Does eSIM work without Wi‑Fi?

Yes. After activation in a covered country you use mobile data over the local operator network. Wi‑Fi is only needed for installing the eSIM (downloading the profile) if you do it over the internet.

What if the eSIM doesn't work?

Check that you're in a country where the plan is valid, that data is enabled for that eSIM, and that the limit isn't used up. If installation fails, check device compatibility. For other issues contact the seller's support – most provide a guide or email support.
