You've just purchased a travel eSIM from Simcardo and want to set it up on your iPhone. Great choice! The entire process takes about 2-3 minutes and requires no technical expertise.
Before You Begin
A quick checklist to ensure smooth installation:
- WiFi connection – You'll need internet access to download the eSIM profile. Hotel WiFi, home network, or even mobile data works fine.
- Unlocked iPhone – Your iPhone must be carrier-unlocked to use eSIMs from different providers. Not sure if yours is unlocked?
- Compatible model – iPhone XR, XS and all newer models support eSIM. Verify your model.
- QR code ready – You received it via email right after purchase. It's also available in your Simcardo account.
Method 1: Scan QR Code (Easiest)
This is the quickest way to install:
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data)
- Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan
- Choose Use QR Code
- Point your camera at the Simcardo QR code
- When prompted, tap Add Cellular Plan
- Label the plan something like "Simcardo Travel" – this helps distinguish it from your main SIM
That's it! Your eSIM is installed and ready to use.
Method 2: Manual Installation
Can't scan the QR code? No problem – you can enter the details manually:
- Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
- Tap Enter Details Manually
- Enter the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from your Simcardo email
- Tap Next and follow the prompts
You'll find both codes in your confirmation email and in your web account.
Method 3: Direct Installation (iOS 17.4+)
Running iOS 17.4 or later? There's an even simpler option. Just tap the "Install on iPhone" button in your Simcardo email, and the installation starts automatically. No QR scanning needed.
After Installation: Important Settings
Your eSIM is installed, but there are a few things to check before traveling:
Enable Data Roaming
This is what users forget most often! Without roaming enabled, your eSIM won't work abroad.
- Go to Settings → Cellular
- Tap on your Simcardo eSIM
- Turn on Data Roaming
Set the Correct Line for Data
If you have multiple SIMs, make sure your iPhone uses Simcardo for mobile data while traveling:
- Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data
- Select your Simcardo eSIM
Tip: Keep your main SIM active for calls and SMS while using Simcardo for data. You get the best of both worlds!
When Should I Install the eSIM?
You can install your eSIM anytime before traveling – it won't activate until you actually connect to a network in your destination. So you can set it up a day ahead, at the airport, or even on the plane (if it has WiFi).

Troubleshooting Common Issues
Most installations go smoothly, but if something gets stuck:
