eSIM is a standardised technology used by operators worldwide. The profile is stored in a secure area of the device and is protected by the same kind of security that protects your main SIM. Using eSIM does not, by itself, expose your personal data to third parties beyond what your operator and the eSIM provider need to provide the service.

The eSIM profile is downloaded over a secure connection and stored in the device’s secure element or equivalent. The operator authenticates the device and the profile; the profile is not stored in the cloud for ongoing use. When you use the eSIM, the device communicates with the network in the same way as with a physical SIM.

Benefits: Same security standards as physical SIM; no physical card to lose or be copied; profile tied to the device. Limitations: You must trust the eSIM provider with the data they need (e.g. email, payment); if the device is lost, the eSIM is on it unless you remote-wipe.

From a security standpoint, eSIM is comparable to a physical SIM: both identify the device to the network and use operator standards. The main difference is delivery and storage (digital vs card). Choosing a reputable provider and keeping your device updated is important for both.
በተደጋጋሚ የተጠየቁ ጥያቄዎች
- Can someone steal my eSIM?
- Does the eSIM provider see my browsing?
- The provider and the carrier can see that data is used and which network you use; they do not see the content of your traffic if you use normal encrypted connections (e.g. HTTPS).
- Is eSIM safer than a physical SIM?
- Both use the same security principles. eSIM avoids a physical card that could be lost or cloned; the profile stays in the device.
- What data does the eSIM provider need?
- በተለምዶ የማቅረብ ኢሜይል እና በምንም ይታወቃል። የአቅራቢውን የግል ፖሊሲ ይንቁ የሚያከብር እና እንዴት ይጠቀሙ ይመለከታል።
- Can eSIM be hacked?
- The eSIM itself uses standard operator security. Risks are similar to using any SIM: keep your device updated and locked, and use trusted providers.
- Is my main SIM at risk if I add an eSIM?
- No. Adding an eSIM does not weaken or expose your main SIM. They are separate profiles.
- What if I lose my phone with an eSIM?
- Use remote lock or wipe if available. The eSIM is on the device, so disabling the device or the account (if the provider allows) can limit misuse.
- Are travel eSIM providers regulated?
- They operate under the same telecom and consumer rules as other operators or resellers in the countries they serve. Reputable providers publish terms and privacy policies.
- Does eSIM use encryption?
- Yes. The profile is delivered and stored using standard security; over-the-air communication with the network is encrypted as with physical SIMs.
- Should I avoid eSIM for sensitive work?
- eSIM is not inherently less secure. For high-sensitivity use, follow your organisation’s policy and use trusted providers and devices.
