If you're planning a trip and not sure how much mobile data you'll need, or whether a travel eSIM is even the right call for your destination, you can now ask Simcardo Connectivity Planner directly inside ChatGPT. It's a free, advisory app — no signup, no purchases inside ChatGPT — built and maintained by the Simcardo team.

What the app does
Simcardo Connectivity Planner gives you three tools, all of which work as a normal chat conversation:
- Estimate trip data usage — tell the planner where you're going, how long, and what you'll do online (maps, social, video calls, streaming). It returns a total GB estimate with a breakdown per activity.
- Compare connectivity strategies — see a side-by-side comparison of travel eSIM vs international roaming vs Wi-Fi-first vs local SIM, with cost ranges and reliability for your destination.
- Destination-aware checklist — coverage notes, common network issues, recommended phone settings, and a pre-departure checklist tailored to the country you're visiting.
How to open it
You have two ways to start a session:
Option 1: Open the app directly
- Open Simcardo Connectivity Planner in ChatGPT (it opens chatgpt.com in a new tab).
- If you're not signed in to ChatGPT, sign in.
- The app launches inside a fresh ChatGPT conversation — start typing.
Option 2: Mention us inside an existing chat
Inside any ChatGPT conversation, type @Simcardo (or "use the Simcardo app") and ChatGPT will surface the Connectivity Planner. The exact phrasing depends on your ChatGPT version — if it doesn't pick it up, fall back to Option 1.
💡 Note: The Apps SDK is rolling out across ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Business plans. If you don't see the app in your ChatGPT, your account may not be in the rollout yet — try Option 1, which works regardless.
How to ask good questions
The planner works best when you give it concrete trip details. Compare these two prompts:
- Vague: "I'm going to Japan, do I need an eSIM?"
- Specific: "I'm spending 9 days in Japan in October, mostly Tokyo and Kyoto. I'll use Google Maps a lot, occasional video calls with family, light streaming on the train. Two travelers sharing one phone hotspot. What kind of plan should I look at?"
The specific version gets you a real GB estimate, a strategy comparison ranked by fit, and a Japan-specific checklist (e.g. coverage notes for rural areas, dual-SIM tips, JR Pass / Wi-Fi situations).
Things you can ask
- "Estimate data for 14 days in Thailand, heavy maps and social, occasional Netflix on the bus."
- "Compare strategies for a 3-week trip across France, Italy, and Spain."
- "Give me a checklist for travelling to Morocco — what should I set on my phone before I land?"
- "What network issues are common in rural Australia?"
What the app will and won't do
To keep things transparent:
- ✅ It estimates data usage based on realistic per-activity rates (not guesses).
- ✅ It compares strategies vendor-neutrally — including options that aren't a Simcardo eSIM.
- ✅ It gives you a destination-aware checklist.
- ❌ It doesn't process payments inside ChatGPT.
- ❌ It doesn't link your ChatGPT account to a Simcardo customer account.
- ❌ It doesn't try to sell you something at the end of every reply.
The app is intentionally read-only. If you decide a Simcardo travel eSIM is the right fit, you can buy one on simcardo.com or any of our other channels. The advice and the purchase are kept separate by design.
If something doesn't work
- "I don't see the app in ChatGPT" — your account may not be in the Apps SDK rollout yet. Use the direct link instead.
- "The estimate looks too high / too low" — the planner uses average per-activity data rates. If your habits are unusual (heavy 4K streaming, or strict Wi-Fi-only discipline), tell it that explicitly: "I only stream when on Wi-Fi" / "I will be tethering my laptop for 2 hours a day". The numbers will adjust.
- "It's giving me general advice instead of country-specific notes" — make sure the country is in your prompt. If it's a small territory, also include the parent country (e.g. "Madeira (Portugal)").
- "I want to talk to a human" — see our contact page or email [email protected]. The ChatGPT app is advisory only and doesn't replace human support.
Privacy in plain English
The Connectivity Planner only sees what you type into ChatGPT during that conversation. We don't store your conversation content for marketing, and we don't tie app usage to any Simcardo customer account. ChatGPT's own data handling rules apply on top of that — see OpenAI's privacy policy for that side of it.
